30-Minute Skirt Tutorial

30 Minute Pink Skirt Made from T-shirt #skirttutorial #easyskirt #DIYskirt
I made this skirt for a friend’s little girl. It was super easy and really only took me about 30 minutes. Even with the freezer paper butterfly detail. See? IMG_5203
It is so easy, you probably all know how to make one already. But I’m going to share a tutorial anyhow. You need a t-shirt. I was making this for a little girl who is five years old and skinny as a rail. So the measurements I used were 15” long and 20” at the waist. (Those measurements included the seam allowance.)
I neglected to take a picture of the t-shirt before I cut it up and started sewing. By the way, it was a woman’s medium shirt and fabric content was 4% spandex.
(I could barely wait to make something out of this beautiful pink shirt!) But these next two pictures should show how the shirt was cut:

I cut the bottom off of the shirt and used the existing hem. If you have read my blog in the past, you’ll know I dislike hemming. And then I cut the waistband out of the chest and back of the shirt. I cut two 6” x 10” pieces.

I sewed the waistband together at the sides. That means the circumference of the waist is 20”.IMG_5174
I gathered the skirt using a large basting stitch on my machine.

I folded the waistband in half with right sides out (hiding the raw edges and seam inside the waistband.)IMG_5176

Then I pinned the waistband of the skirt (with right sides together) to the top of the gathered skirt.

After making sure it is even the whole way around, I used lots of pins to secure it. Then I used a stretch stitch to sew it in place.

You could stop here, but then it would only be a 20-minute skirt.
I did some freezer paper stencils for some decoration. I followed the steps for freezer paper stenciling found here.

As you can see, this is a really easy project! I want one for myself. In the same color. With butterflies.
I just need to find a really big pink t-shirt to use.

  11. This is too cute! I've been working on a full maxi dress for myself but think it's going to be unflattering on me so I was thinking about cutting off the top part and making a skirt like this instead =)
