Crocheted Owl Hats

crocheted owl hat
To catch up with what my family was doing a week or two ago, see my post on our trip to Charleston. I made a bunch of recommendations for places to eat and go that we enjoyed. I also mentioned we drove about 12 hours each way.
My husband drove most of it...I maybe drove three hours each way. He said he didn't mind. That way I got to pick up the dropped toys, switch DVDs for our boys, hand out snacks...you know how it is!
That meant I needed something to do when I wasn't folding myself into the backseat to reach someone's lost bunny.
So I started crocheting. I have really wanted to make owl hats for my boys for a long time. I dusted off my crochet hook and got to work. Owls are so much fun for kids and their rooms...I made owl pillows a year ago for my kiddos.

I found that it didn't take too long to make the hats, but the finishing work (eyes, ears, beak) took forever.
But I finally finished them. And they even fit.

I used the pattern found here to make these hats. However, I used a size K crochet hook to make them large enough to fit my 14-month old. And to make the hat for my three-year old, I added an extra row. Instead of ending up with 39 stitches in the hat (counting by 13 3x) I went with 42 stitches and counted by 14, 3x). I don't know much about crocheting and I think I may have made up my own way to HDC (I think that means half double crochet). So I might have to make a youtube video if anyone wants to duplicate these hats for the sizes I've made. Let me know.

I have a few friends who have crocheting businesses (B.I.B.S.Baby Beans, and Gould Threads ) in case you want to see some incredibly detailed crochet work. I'm finishing a few others to put in my Etsy shop with the other eclectic array of items I keep making.
Does my Etsy shop need more focus?

  4. They're gorgeous! My husband loves owls, but I don't think he'd wear one of these. Well, not out of the house anyway!
