Business Card Holders with Snap Closures

business card holders snap to close #snaps

I’ve made business card holders a few different times (set I, set II) and already have a tutorial for a ruffled business card holder.

I had the idea to improve the tutorial by hammering on snaps for the closures. I thought that making the fronts flat (meaning no button or elastic loop, instead using a hidden snap inside) would make the holder easier to put into a pocket. And the option with a small snap tab on the front was another idea.

 DIY Business card holder
I’ll tell and show you how to make both versions.

Ok, if you’re ready to get started, start by cutting fabric. I used the original dimensions from the ruffle business card holder but added about 1/8” on each side. I cut two large pieces 4 1/2” x 5 1/2”. And then I cut two small pieces 4 1/2” by 2 1/2”. (Add 1/8” on each of those cuts. Gives you more space for seam allowance.)

Oh, and for the one with the snap tab on the outside, you’ll need one additional piece 1 1/2” wide and 5” long.

Begin by folding, pressing under 1/4” and then folding, pressing under another 1/4” and then sewing the top of each of the 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” pieces.

Also, take the 1 1/2” x 5” piece and press in half, then open, press the sides to the mid point, fold in half again to hide the raw edges. Then fold the whole thing in half lengthwise. Top stitch the edges.

You’ve got to fuse interfacing to the wrong side of anywhere you’re going to place a snap.

If you’re making the one with the hidden snap, fuse some scraps of interfacing to the wrong side of the pieces you just folded over twice, pressed, and hemmed. I decided to place my snaps about 1” from the bottom of each and then found the mid point of the width. Mark this spot and make sure it’s covered by interfacing.

For the business card holder with snap in front on the tab, place the interfacing in the middle and fuse it in place.

I placed the front snap about 1 1/2” from the bottom and at the midpoint of the front. I placed the other half of this snap on the bottom of the narrow tab piece. If you need help placing snaps, check out this tutorial. I use a spool instead of the hammer tool she shows, but same idea. Snaps are easy.

After you’ve attached the snaps, you can start assembling the business card holders.

Let’s start with the one with the snap front. Start by basting the pockets to the inside fabric piece (the 4 1/2” x 5 1/2” piece). Make sure you’re basting the pockets on with the hemmed side facing in. Place the snap piece in the middle of one of the bottom with the snap facing down. Baste into place.

After the basting is complete, place the front piece with right sides together onto the basted inner fabric of the business card holder. Line up all corners and make sure the front snap is at the opposite side of where you placed the closure tab piece. That is very important!

Next, sew around the perimeter leaving a space where the closure tab piece was basted. (Where to sew is shown in red below.)

Make sure the space is large enough to turn the whole thing. Clip the corners.

Turn the whole thing, press it flat, and then sew the opening closed.

Fold it in half and press it again. That one’s complete!

To make the business card holder with the hidden snap, follow these instructions….
Baste the 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” pieces with snaps to the short sides of the inside 5 1/2” x 4 1/2” piece. Place the hem side facing toward the middle.

Next, take the outside fabric and place it right sides together with the basted middle piece.

Next, sew around the whole perimeter leaving an opening for turning (shown at the arrow in the picture below).

Clip the corners, turn the whole thing right sides out, and press it flat. Sew the opening closed and the business card holder is complete!
